Texas lawmakers and school choice advocates met at the Capitol last Friday to show their support for HB 3, a top priority for those who value education freedom. Rep. Brad Buckley authored HB 3, which will create Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) that will give parents more power over the type of education their children will receive.
Among the advocates was Riley Gaines, now a famous voice for the protecting women’s sports movement. After tying with a man for fifth place in a collegiate female swimming competition, Gaines bravely spoke out against the situation. As someone who understands the impact of taking a stand in the face of adversity, Protecting Texas Children President Vanessa Sivadge was thrilled to meet Gaines and share their support for school choice.
Gaines stated that HB3 would be a huge step forward for Texas and that public schools must eradicate unelected bureaucrats who refuse to comply with state and federal law. PTC is happy to stand with Riley Gaines and others fighting to protect children from harmful ideologies within the education system.
Numerous investigations have revealed that teachers and other school officials have openly stated their intention to circumvent the law and find ways to help boys posing as girls participate in female athletics. Gaines emphasized that voters want choice, “They reject the idea that the government owns their children.”
The female sports debate is among many issues cited in the demand for school choice, which prompted the Texas Senate to pass a similar ESA bill, SB2. SB2 would give students who qualify for the ESAs $10,000 towards a private school education, while HB3 would offer the qualifying student 85% of the statewide average private school cost.
Lawmakers are making progress in addressing Texans’ frustration with public schools. Riley Gaines showed her support and lent her fame to the movement, empowering Texas parents as they seek the best educational options for their children.
