The special session officially began yesterday at noon, and PTC is calling on our legislators to pass two critical bills to protect women and children in Texas. The special session lasts only 30 days, so it will be fast-paced. Don’t wait until the bills hit the floor. Call your representatives today and encourage them to vote in favor of HB 65 and HB 32.
HB 65 will strengthen laws protecting the most vulnerable among us. Brisco Cain has filed the Women and Child Protection Act to ban chemical abortion in Texas and hold sellers of the abortion pill accountable. If passed, the bill will allow private citizens to sue distributors of abortion pills, even those who live outside of Texas.
HB 32, filed by Valoree Swanson, is referred to as the Texas Women’s Privacy Act, also known as the “bathroom bill.” This bill will restrict men from entering public women’s restrooms, locker rooms, shelters, or showers. The language defines a man as someone who was biologically born a man, preventing entry by cross-dressers or transsexuals.
Violators will be fined $5,000 for the first violation and $25,000 for subsequent ones. In addition, the bill will allow private citizens to sue entities that violate the law, sending a message that any space funded by our tax dollars must comply with basic common-sense safety measures for women and children.
During the regular session, the Women’s Privacy Act passed in the Senate but sat without a hearing in the State Affairs committee, which was chaired by Rep. Ken King. Supporters of the bill urged King to schedule a hearing, but to no avail. PTC and many other concerned organizations are calling out Rep. King for this and urging the passage of this common-sense legislation.
