Texas Senator Mayes Middleton filed Senate Bill 406 which requires a person’s sex to be included on birth certificates and prevents the changing of that sex for certain people who have decided to identify by a sex other than the one they were given at birth.
Protecting Texas Children President Vanessa Sivadge gave testimony in favor of this legislation on the Senate Floor. She shared that one of the ways that Texas Children’s Hospital was able to use illegal public funds for sex change surgeries on children was that they were changing the pronouns on people’s birth certificates.
In her testimony, Vanessa said,
“Imagine the disastrous, life-threatening, and unsafe consequences that would result from a doctor treating a male instead of a female or vice versa – all because the patient was permitted by law to change their birth certificate to reflect their preferred gender identity. The patient would undoubtedly be harmed.”
Senator Middleton said this legislation would not only affect birth certificates but also any identification that requires a birth certificate to acquire. Middleton said, “This bill is going to require that your at-birth sex is what’s on those state documents.”
In her testimony, Vanessa explained her reasons for supporting this legislation. She said that this bill would result in, “most importantly, safe patient outcomes. This bill, if passed, would literally save lives.”
