Texas introduced a bill that would allow individuals to sue manufacturers and distributors of abortion pills. The latest version of the bill, filed by State Senator Bryan Hughes (R-Mineola), allows citizens to file a wrongful death lawsuit if the pills result in the “harm or death” of a mother or an unborn child. The Texas attorney general would also be able to sue on behalf of unborn children.
While laws similar to this already exist, this bill aims to increase enforcement measures and hold accountable those who continue contributing to the death of unborn babies. It is already illegal in Texas to mail abortion pills, but this new legislation allows private citizens to enforce the law by filing private civil suits. The bill also tackles shield laws, making it possible to sue manufacturers in other states and break through their immunity laws.
Should this legislation pass, it would help ensure the protection of unborn children in Texas and ensure the safety of their mothers. These pills are not safe for mothers. The FDA, notorious for underreporting adverse effects, has reported 4,000 adverse effects from these pills in the last 25 years, including dozens of deaths. The Ethics and Public Policy Center produced a study revealing that abortion pills cause one in ten women to suffer serious medical complications. Not only do these pills kill innocent babies, but they also harm mothers.
Protecting Texas Children supports this legislation, which goes one step further towards abolishing abortion in the state of Texas once and for all. We are grateful to the lawmakers who have filed and supported this legislation, and we know that together we can protect these unborn lives.
RFK Jr.’s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that Medicare and Medicaid will no longer be allowed to reimburse any hospital nationwide that provides sex-trait modifications to children. This law is the Trump administration’s largest attempt to end gender mutilation procedures on children.
A senior Trump administration official announced that, “Hospitals cannot participate in Medicare or Medicaid if they provide sex trait modification services to minors, full stop.” They hope that this will “end sex-trait modifications for minors nationally.”
The HHS and CMS finalized a rule in June that prevents individual and small-group health plans from including gender-affirming care as an essential health benefit under the Affordable Care Act. This new proposed rule takes things one step further, forcing hospitals that wish to participate in the Medicaid and Medicare programs to stop mutilating children.
Proponents of child mutilation claim the Trump administration is creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation surrounding “trans care.” Meanwhile, the real intimidation comes from doctors who tell frightened parents that unless they mutilate their children, they will commit suicide. What is truly frightening is that certain facets of our society defend this barbaric practice. Protecting Texas Children is grateful to the Trump administration for consistently fighting to end child mutilation and protect children.
