The Cathedral of Hope offered a “Celebrating the Art of Drag Sunday” service that was intended to “bless and affirm those who use drag as an art form and affirm their transgender siblings made in the image of God.” During the service, Rev. Brooke Dooley, an associate pastor for youth and young adults who goes by the drag name “Brock Bottom,” was a guest speaker. Her online bio states that she enjoys “blatantly ignoring gender norms in favor of an uninhibited, playful expression of being that combines queer history, pop culture, tear-away pants, and, at times, religion.”
Photos from the service include individuals wearing bondage gear and dog masks. In addition, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgences were also part of the service. This group of men is known for portraying heavily made-up nuns. A quick search of their website will reveal sexual images of their group members and their advocacy for the trans and LGBT movement.
Following the service, the church sponsored a drag brunch featuring performers who joked about killing Trump supporters and fighting Gov. Abbott, insulting his inability to “stand up and fight.” This church-sponsored event included revealing clothing, sexual dancing by drag performers, and profanity.
The purpose of the drag brunch was to raise funds to fight against SB 18 and other legislation prohibiting drag shows in municipal libraries that receive taxpayer funds. The question is: Why is a church raising funds to combat this legislation? Why would they be advocating for men presenting as women or women presenting as men to be in public spaces and interact with minors?
