Yesterday, the House passed SB 412, a priority piece of legislation for PTC. This is the first PTC priority legislation to clear both chambers and make it through the entire legislative process. SB 412 is now headed for Governor Abbott’s desk.
SB 412 aims to protect children in school libraries by prohibiting obscene and inappropriate materials. In response to critics who claimed that the bill would put unnecessary pressure on teachers and librarians, Rep. Mitch Little (R-Lewisville) stated, “Teachers and librarians who intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly expose children to harmful content should be in fear.”
One critic, Rep. Erin Zweiner (D-Driftwood), claimed that schools need to “show children what sexual assault looks like.” Rep. Little responded to this claim, saying, “That is not the purpose of school.”
Christin Bentley, who serves as the Chair of the subcommittee for the Texas GOP Legislative Priority: Stop Sexualizing Texas Kids, celebrated this victory and credited Protecting Texas Children and other grassroots organizations that have worked tirelessly to end the sexualization of kids.
PTC is thrilled to see our efforts pay off, and we are so thankful to the tireless work of the Texas House GOP and other grassroots organizations that have joined with us in this fight.
