It started with a headline.
Another school shooting.
Another community grieving.
As the day progressed, each video clip on my social media feed revealed yet another heartbreaking detail. Honestly, I wished I hadn’t seen so much.
My heart broke for the victims, the wounded, the survivors, and the parents of the children who never came home.
By the time I picked up my children from school that afternoon, I couldn’t shake one haunting question:
What if my children’s school is next?
That question sent my husband and I on a journey we never expected—a journey that didn’t just change where our children learned, but transformed our family forever.

In the days that followed, my husband and I had long conversations about things we could do to keep our kids safer. He joined the school’s volunteer program for fathers who work to support school safety. I even considered volunteering on campus just to be closer to our kids. We had a plan. But before diving into it, we scheduled a meeting with the principal to better understand the school’s safety procedures.
The meeting was futile. The principal was kind and did her best to reassure us that their safety protocols would keep students out of danger, but many of our questions remained unanswered due to confidentiality protocols.
My husband and I walked back to our car after the meeting in silence and without answers.
That night, after we tucked the kids into bed, the house was unusually quiet. I was brushing my teeth, trying to push the day’s worries aside, while my husband sat silently on the bed. He hadn’t said a word. Then he looked at me with an expression I’d seen before—the one that always came just before a life-changing conversation.
After what felt like an eternity, he spoke.
“What if we homeschool?”
For the first time in weeks, the weight I’d been carrying seemed to lift all at once. It felt as though God had answered our prayers and provided the path we had never even considered. My heart whispered yes. My mouth, however, had a very different response.
“What? Me? Homeschool our kids?”
Me. A homeschool mom?
I stood there frozen, toothbrush still in my mouth as toothpaste slowly dripped down my chin. I stared at him in complete disbelief.
How do people even do that? I wondered. I’m not a teacher. I don’t know the first thing about lesson plans. And if I’m being completely honest… I’m not even sure I have the patience for this.
How do we even start? Neither of us had any idea.
And so, I did what comes naturally to me as a journalist— I researched and interviewed homeschooling moms at our church. That’s when everything changed. I imagined these ladies handing me a list of websites to visit and a pile of books to read to my kids at our kitchen table. Instead, I was introduced to a world I never knew existed.
I discovered a variety of curricula designed for every kind of learner, homeschooling styles ranging from very structured methods to delightfully flexible ones. I found hybrid programs, co-ops, field trips that turned parks, museums, science labs, factories, and local historical sites into classrooms. There were music lessons, sports, and a community of experienced parents eager to help guide newcomers such as ourselves. There were so many wonderful options that matched our lifestyle and the best thing is that we didn’t have to do it alone.
For the first time, I realized that education didn’t have to be one-size-fits-all. Instead of forcing our children to conform to a certain mold, we could choose an education model that was designed around their unique needs.
We pulled our kids out of public school and began our homeschooling journey.
The transition wasn’t a smooth one. There were days I wondered whether I was capable of teaching every academic subject to my children. What I didn’t expect was how quickly these doubts began to fade the more experience I gained, and the more I learned from veteran homeschooling moms. I grew to believe that the education of my children is a sacred responsibility that God had entrusted to me. My husband and I often reminded each other why we made this decision whenever the doubts crept in, trusting it was leading us toward God’s will for our children.
As time went on, I became more comfortable in my new role and homeschooling began to feel less intimidating. I discovered that, when all else failed, there would be someone on YouTube who taught long division better than I could.

Four years later, I am still grateful to God every day that we took that first uncertain step. What started as a search to avoid every parent’s worst nightmare led us to one of the greatest blessings for our family. We thought we were searching for safety, but we found ourselves learning together in ways we never imagined. Somewhere between the math lessons, field trips, Bible studies, and off-topic conversations, homeschooling became more than learning at home— it brought us much closer as a family.
Over these years, I’ve come to realize that our family’s story is just one among thousands. More and more parents across Texas are choosing to homeschool, each reason as unique as their own families. And that made me wonder: Why are so many Texans rethinking education, and why is homeschooling growing so rapidly across our state?
But that is a question I’ll explore next.
Now I know that one headline can change far more than your perspective.
It can change your life.
